Flat Roofing Cardiff
& South Wales
Flat roofing in Cardiff is one of the most common jobs we carry out — and one of the most frequently botched by other contractors. A flat roof that has been poorly installed or patched up with the wrong materials will fail, usually within a few years. The Welsh climate does not forgive shortcuts. Heavy rainfall, wind-driven rain off the Bristol Channel, and sharp temperature shifts between seasons all put flat roofing under constant pressure. That is why we treat every flat roof job — whether it is a small garage in Penarth or a large commercial unit in Newport — with the same level of care and attention to detail.
Wales Roofing and Guttering installs, repairs and replaces flat roofs across Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend, Swansea, Pontypridd, Caerphilly and beyond. We work with all the main flat roofing systems: torch-on felt, EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass and single ply membranes. Each has its strengths and its limitations, and part of our role is to advise you on which system suits your property, your budget and the expected lifespan you need from the roof.
Every flat roofing quote is free, carries no obligation, and includes a clear breakdown of what is being proposed and why. All completed work is covered by a written guarantee.

Flat Roofing Systems We Install & Repair
Not all flat roofing materials perform the same way, and the right choice depends on factors specific to your property — its size, location, how accessible the roof needs to be, and whether there is existing covering that must be stripped first. We install four main systems across Cardiff and wider Wales, and we are happy to explain the trade-offs between them before you commit.
Torch-On Felt
A cost-effective option for garages, porches and smaller flat roofs. Modern torch-on felt systems are a significant step up from the old multi-layer felt that tends to crack and split. When installed properly, you can expect 15–20 years of reliable service.
EPDM Rubber
EPDM rubber membranes are fully adhered in a single sheet with no seams or joins, which removes the most common point of failure on flat roofs. They handle temperature extremes well, resist UV damage, and carry expected lifespans of 25–30 years or more. Well suited to extensions, dormers and garages.
GRP Fibreglass
GRP creates a rigid, fully seamless finish that is completely waterproof from day one. It is particularly good for areas that may receive occasional foot traffic — balconies, bay tops, or flat roofs where window cleaners need access. Properly installed, GRP fibreglass roofing lasts upwards of 25 years with virtually no maintenance.
Single Ply Membrane
Single ply systems such as PVC and TPO are widely used on larger flat roofs and commercial properties. They are lightweight, quick to install and resistant to chemicals and standing water. We specify and install these systems for properties in Bridgend, Swansea and across South Wales where the roof area makes them the most practical option.
Why Flat Roofs
Need Specialist Attention
Why Flat Roofs Need Specialist Attention
A pitched roof sheds water by gravity. A flat roof does not have that advantage — so it relies entirely on the quality of the membrane, the standard of the detailing at edges and upstands, and correct drainage falls to move rainwater off the surface. Get any of those wrong and water will find its way in, often without any visible sign until the damage is already done.
This is one area where experience matters more than price. We have stripped back flat roofs in Barry, Caerphilly and across the Valleys that were only two or three years old, where the original installer cut corners on the preparation or used materials that were never going to cope with standing water. The timber beneath was already rotting. That sort of failure is avoidable with proper workmanship, and it is the reason we take the time to get each stage right rather than rushing to finish.
We also carry out flat roof insulation upgrades as part of a new installation or replacement. Current Building Regulations in Wales require certain thermal performance standards for roof replacements, and meeting those standards can reduce heat loss noticeably — particularly on older extensions and conservatory roofs.
Flat Roofing for Extensions, Garages & Commercial Properties
Most of our domestic flat roofing work in Cardiff involves rear extensions, garage roofs, dormers, bay window tops and porches. These structures are often the weak point on a property — they collect leaves and debris, drainage can be poorly designed from the original build, and the covering deteriorates faster than the main pitched roof above.
On the commercial side, we work on offices, retail units, schools and industrial buildings across South Wales. Larger flat roofs bring their own considerations — thermal movement, multiple penetrations for pipework and extraction, and the need for walkways or edge protection. We specify and install single ply and EPDM systems that are rated for commercial use, and we can arrange phased work to minimise disruption to your operations.
If your flat roof is leaking, we can usually carry out an initial inspection within a few working days and provide you with a repair or replacement quote on site.
Our Recent Flat Roofing Work Across Wales
A selection of flat roofing projects completed across Cardiff and wider Wales — including EPDM rubber installations, GRP fibreglass roofs, felt replacements and flat roof repairs — all carried out with the same attention to detail and quality materials.
EPDM Flat Roof — Cardiff Extension
Flat roofing costs in Cardiff and South Wales vary depending on the size of the roof, the system chosen and whether the existing covering needs stripping back first. A small garage roof replacement will cost considerably less than a full re-covering of a large rear extension, so it is not practical to quote a fixed price here. What we can tell you is that we do not inflate our quotes, we do not add charges after the work has started, and we will always explain why we are recommending a particular system over another.
If you would like a clearer idea of cost before arranging a survey, call us and we are happy to give you a rough guide based on a description of the job. For an accurate figure, we will need to see the roof in person — there is no charge for that visit.
Why Choose Wales
Roofing & Guttering
Why Choose Wales Roofing & Guttering
Flat roofing contractors are not hard to find in Cardiff, but the quality of work varies widely. We know that because a significant portion of our work involves correcting problems left by previous installers. Here is what sets us apart.
![]()
No Subcontractors
Every flat roof we install is fitted by our own team — not subcontracted labour brought in for the day. That means we control the quality from start to finish, and if you have a question on site, you are speaking to the people doing the work. There is no middleman, no miscommunication, and nowhere for accountability to slip through the cracks.

Trusted Materials, Properly Installed
We source our flat roofing materials from established manufacturers — Firestone, Polyroof, and other brands with proven track records in the UK market. Cheaper alternatives might knock a few pounds off the quote, but they rarely hold up well in Wales. Persistent damp, temperature swings and coastal winds take their toll, and we would rather install something once than return in eighteen months to deal with a failure that should not have happened.

Transparent Processes
Flat roofing work often turns up surprises once the old covering is removed — rotten decking, failed insulation, damaged joists. When that happens, we stop and explain the options before continuing. You will never come home to find extra work done without your agreement. Every job is documented with photographs, so you have a record of what was found and what was done about it.

Flat Roofing Across Cardiff, South Wales & Beyond
Our base is in Cardiff, but our flat roofing work takes us right across Wales. We regularly carry out flat roof installations and repairs in Newport, the Vale of Glamorgan, Penarth, Barry, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Bridgend and Swansea. We have also worked further afield — Carmarthen, Pembrokeshire, and into the Valleys — wherever the job warrants the travel.
The same standards apply regardless of location. Whether we are replacing a single garage flat roof in Splott or re-covering a large commercial unit outside Bridgend, the preparation, materials and workmanship are identical. Most of our flat roofing work comes through word of mouth and repeat customers, which tells us the approach works.

Flat Roofing FAQs
Common questions from homeowners and businesses across Cardiff and Wales about flat roofing installation, repairs, materials and costs.
How much does a flat roof cost in Cardiff?
Flat roof costs depend on the size of the area, the material chosen and whether the existing covering needs removing. As a rough guide, a small garage flat roof in Cardiff might start from around £1,200–£1,800 for EPDM or felt, while a larger extension re-covering in GRP fibreglass could be £2,500–£4,500 or more. We provide free, no-obligation quotes after an on-site survey so you know the exact cost before any work begins.
How long does a flat roof last in Wales?
This depends heavily on the material and the quality of installation. Traditional felt flat roofs typically last 10–15 years. EPDM rubber roofing has an expected lifespan of 25–30 years, and GRP fibreglass can last 25 years or more with minimal maintenance. The Welsh climate is demanding, so choosing the right system and having it installed correctly makes a significant difference to longevity.
Is EPDM or GRP fibreglass better for a flat roof?
Both are excellent systems, but they suit different situations. EPDM is more flexible, handles thermal movement well, and works particularly well on larger flat roofs. GRP fibreglass creates a rigid, seamless finish that stands up well to foot traffic and is often preferred for balconies and bay tops. We will assess your property and recommend the system that best suits the specific requirements of your roof.
Do I need planning permission for a flat roof in Wales?
In most cases, replacing a flat roof on an existing structure in Wales is considered permitted development and does not require planning permission. However, if the building is listed, in a conservation area, or if you are significantly altering the height or structure, you may need approval. We can advise you on this during the survey.
Can flat roof repairs be carried out in wet weather?
Some flat roofing materials — particularly torch-on felt — require dry conditions for a proper bond. EPDM and GRP also perform best when installed on a dry surface. We monitor the forecast carefully and will schedule work during a suitable weather window. For emergency leaks, we can often carry out temporary waterproofing to protect your property until a permanent repair can be completed.
What areas do you cover for flat roofing?
We are based in Cardiff and cover all of Wales. Our regular flat roofing areas include Newport, the Vale of Glamorgan, Penarth, Barry, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Bridgend, Swansea, and the South Wales Valleys. We also travel further afield for larger projects.
Need a flat roofing specialist in Cardiff or anywhere across Wales?
From small flat roof repairs to full installations using EPDM, GRP fibreglass or single ply systems, we bring the same high standards to every project. It is the preparation and detailing beneath the surface that determines how a flat roof performs — and that is where our focus is.
