Cardiff & South Wales
If you need chimney repairs in Cardiff, our team handles everything from cracked mortar and failed lead flashing through to full chimney stack rebuilds. We have spent over 15 years working on chimneys across Wales, and that hands-on knowledge makes a real difference when it comes to diagnosing faults and carrying out repairs that hold up long-term.
Chimney problems rarely fix themselves. What starts as hairline cracks in the pointing can quickly lead to water tracking down into your ceilings, damaging timbers and plasterwork along the way. The sooner the issue is identified and dealt with, the less it tends to cost.
We cover Cardiff, Newport, Swansea, Bridgend, the Vale of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly and beyond. Whether it is a Victorian terrace in Canton or a detached house in Cowbridge, the same care and standards apply to every job.

& Leadwork Services
Our Chimney Repair & Leadwork Services
We provide a full range of chimney and leadwork services. Whether the job is straightforward pointing work or a more involved stack rebuild, we will talk you through what is needed before any work starts.
Chimney Repointing
Mortar joints between chimney bricks erode over time, particularly on exposed stacks. We rake out the old material and repoint with a durable, weather-resistant mix that matches the existing brickwork. Getting the mortar specification right is important — too hard a mix on older lime mortar joints can do more harm than good.
Lead Flashing & Leadwork
Lead flashing forms the seal between your chimney stack and the roof covering. When it cracks, lifts or pulls away from the chase, water finds its way in. We strip and rework step flashings, back gutters, soakers and aprons to current Lead Sheet Association standards. Every piece is dressed properly and fixed to last.
Flaunching Repairs
The flaunching is the mortar bed that holds your chimney pots in place and sheds rainwater away from the top of the stack. When it cracks or breaks apart, rain soaks straight into the chimney core. We remove the old flaunching and apply a new strong mortar cap, ensuring a proper seal around each pot.
Chimney Stack Rebuilds
Where the brickwork has deteriorated beyond repair — spalled faces, movement cracks, or a stack that has begun to lean — a partial or full rebuild may be the most sensible option. We carefully take down the affected section and rebuild using matching bricks and appropriate mortar, finished with new flaunching and lead flashing.
Chimney Pots, Cowls & Caps
Loose or damaged pots are a safety hazard in high winds. We secure, replace or cap chimney pots as required and fit bird guards or cowls to prevent blockages. For disused flues, we install ventilated caps that stop rain getting in while still allowing airflow to prevent condensation inside the flue.
Chimney Leak Detection
Damp patches near a chimney breast do not always point to the obvious cause. Water can travel along timbers and lintels before it shows itself on a ceiling or wall. We carry out thorough inspections to trace the actual source of the leak before recommending any work — because guessing wastes time and money.
Why Chimney Maintenance
Matters in Wales
Why Chimney Maintenance Matters in Wales
Wales gets more rainfall than most parts of the UK. Factor in the coastal winds that sweep across Cardiff, Barry and the Vale of Glamorgan, and chimney stacks take a real battering. That persistent moisture finds every weak point — cracked mortar, split lead, damaged flaunching — and works its way inside.
Older properties in areas like Pontypridd, Caerphilly and Newport often have original lime mortar joints that have been weathering for decades. These stacks need careful attention. Using the wrong mortar type during repointing can trap moisture inside the brickwork rather than letting it breathe, which accelerates the deterioration rather than slowing it.
We understand these materials and how they behave in our climate. It is the sort of practical knowledge that only comes from years of working on Welsh properties, and it shapes every chimney repair we carry out.

Why Choose Wales Roofing & Guttering
Choosing the right contractor for chimney work can be difficult, particularly if you have not had this type of repair done before. Here is what sets us apart.
![]()
Our Own Team, Not Subcontractors
Every member of our crew works for us directly. There are no middlemen or agencies involved. If you have a question on site, you are speaking to the person doing the work. That level of accountability matters, particularly with chimney repairs where access and safety are constant considerations.
![]()
Proper Materials, Correctly Specified
We source our lead from reputable suppliers and use the correct code weight for each application. Mortar mixes are specified to suit the age and type of brickwork — not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is this attention to specification that determines whether a repair lasts five years or twenty-five.

Documented & Transparent
Once we open up a chimney, we sometimes find problems that were not visible from ground level. When that happens, we explain the options clearly and agree a way forward before proceeding. Every repair is documented with photographs so you can see exactly what was done and why.

When Should You Call a Chimney Repair Specialist?
Not every chimney fault is obvious from ground level. But there are warning signs worth watching for: damp patches on walls or ceilings near chimney breasts, visible cracks or gaps in the mortar joints on the stack, discoloured or spalling bricks, loose or cracked flaunching around the pots, and lead flashing that has lifted or pulled away from the brickwork. If you spot any of these, it is worth getting an inspection booked before minor damage becomes a larger and more expensive problem.

Common Questions
Chimney Repairs — Common Questions
We get asked many of the same questions about chimney repairs, repointing and leadwork. Here are the answers to the most common ones.
How much do chimney repairs cost in Cardiff?
The cost depends on the type and extent of the work. Minor repointing on a single chimney stack might start from a few hundred pounds, while a full rebuild with new leadwork will cost more. We provide free, no-obligation quotes after inspecting the chimney, so you will know the cost before any work starts. Scaffolding and access requirements can also affect the price.
How do I know if my chimney needs repointing?
Look at the mortar joints between the bricks on your chimney stack. If the mortar has changed colour, started to crumble or recede, or if you can see gaps where it has fallen away entirely, repointing is needed. Damp patches appearing on internal walls near the chimney breast can also indicate that moisture is getting through deteriorated mortar joints.
How long does chimney repointing last?
When done properly with the right mortar specification, repointing on a chimney should last 20 to 30 years or more. The key factors are using the correct mortar mix for the age and type of brickwork, thorough preparation of the joints, and proper application technique. Cutting corners on any of these will reduce the lifespan.
What is lead flashing and why does it fail?
Lead flashing is the sheet lead that forms a watertight seal where the chimney meets the roof. Over time, lead can crack due to thermal expansion and contraction, or it can lift away from the chase if the mortar holding it in place deteriorates. Failed sealant, poor original installation and fatigue from wind movement are also common causes. We strip the old lead and install new flashing to current standards.
