Why EPDM Rubber Roofing
Outperforms Traditional Flat Roof Materials
Why EPDM Rubber Roofing
Outperforms Traditional Flat Roof Materials
Rubber roofing in Cardiff has become the go-to solution for flat and low-pitch roofs, and for good reason. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a single-ply synthetic rubber membrane that has been used on commercial buildings worldwide for over forty years. In the last decade, it has steadily replaced felt as the preferred covering for domestic flat roofs as well — garages, home extensions, dormers, bay tops and garden rooms across South Wales are now routinely fitted with it.
The material itself is manufactured in large sheets, which means most domestic roofs can be covered in a single piece with no joints or seams. That matters in Wales, where driving rain finds its way through the smallest gap. Unlike traditional felt, EPDM does not crack, blister or become brittle over time. It remains flexible through the temperature swings we get here — from hard frosts in January through to the heat that occasionally catches everyone off guard in summer.
A properly installed rubber roof will last well over 40 years with very little ongoing maintenance. Felt, by comparison, typically needs replacing every 10 to 15 years. The maths are not complicated. Although EPDM carries a higher upfront cost, the long-term saving is substantial — and you will not be paying for another re-roof within a decade.
What Makes EPDM
the Right Choice for Your Property
What Makes EPDM the Right Choice for Your Property
There are several flat roofing systems on the market, and homeowners in Cardiff, Newport and the Vale of Glamorgan regularly ask us how EPDM compares. Here is where it stands.
Against felt: felt is cheaper to fit, but its lifespan is roughly a third of rubber. It degrades under UV exposure, becomes brittle in cold weather and is prone to cracking at the seams. Felt roofs on garages and extensions across Pontypridd, Barry and Penarth frequently fail within 10 to 12 years. EPDM avoids these weaknesses entirely.
Against fibreglass (GRP): fibreglass provides a hard, rigid finish — useful for walkable areas like balconies. But it is susceptible to cracking on roofs that experience structural movement, and it needs dry conditions during installation. EPDM is more forgiving. It flexes with the building, handles Welsh weather during fitting, and does not require specialist curing conditions.
EPDM is also installed without open flames. Traditional felt roofing involves torching, which introduces a fire risk — particularly on occupied buildings. The adhesive-bonded process used with rubber is safer for both the installation team and the property.

Rubber Roofing Installation Across Cardiff and South Wales
We fit EPDM rubber roofing across a range of domestic and commercial structures. Most installations are completed in a single day — certainly for standard garage and extension roofs — which keeps disruption to a minimum.
Garages, Extensions and Dormers
These are the three structures we fit rubber roofing to most often. Garage roofs in particular are a frequent job — the old felt covering has failed, water is getting in, and the timber deck underneath needs attention before the new membrane goes on. Extensions and dormers follow a similar pattern. We check the existing deck, replace any damaged OSB boarding, and then bond the EPDM membrane using a water-based adhesive. Edge trims and flashings are fitted to create a watertight seal where the roof meets walls or upstands.

How We Install an EPDM Rubber Roof
Every rubber roofing job starts with a proper survey. We inspect the existing roof deck, check the fall (the slight slope that directs rainwater toward the guttering), and identify any timber that needs replacing. If the existing decking is sound, the new membrane can often be laid over it — saving time and cost.
On the day of installation, we strip any old covering, fit new OSB boards where required, apply the water-based deck adhesive, and lay the EPDM membrane. The rubber is rolled out, positioned, and bonded to the deck. We then fit perimeter trims, flashings and any necessary upstands to form a complete waterproof seal. Most domestic roofs — a single or double garage, a rear extension — are completed within a day. Larger or more complex structures may take two days.
Once finished, the roof requires almost no maintenance. An annual visual check and an occasional clear of any debris from the guttering is all that is needed.

Where We Install Rubber Roofing in Wales
We are based in Cardiff and carry out rubber roofing installations throughout Wales. Our regular working areas include Newport, Bridgend, the Vale of Glamorgan, Swansea, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Penarth and Barry — though we are happy to travel further for larger projects.
The majority of our EPDM work is residential, but we also handle commercial flat roofing where a rubber membrane is the appropriate solution. Whether it is a terraced property in Cathays, a detached home in Lisvane, a new-build extension in Bridgend, or a commercial unit in Newport, we apply the same standards and use the same quality materials on every job.
Every quote is free, provided in writing, and comes with no obligation. All completed rubber roofing work carries a written guarantee. We are fully insured and work to current building regulations, including the thermal performance requirements that apply when replacing a flat roof covering in full.

Our Own Team — No Subcontractors
The crew that arrives at your property works for us directly. We do not pass jobs on to subcontractors, which means you are dealing with the same people from start to finish. If something needs discussing on site, you are speaking to the roofers actually carrying out the work.

Quality Materials That Last
We source our EPDM membranes from established manufacturers with proven track records. Cheap rubber sheeting from unverified suppliers might reduce the quote, but it will not hold up to Welsh weather. We fit products that we are confident standing behind — it is as straightforward as that.

Free Surveys and Written Guarantees
We carry out a free roof survey before quoting. If we uncover anything unexpected once the old covering is stripped — rotten timber, inadequate falls, structural movement — we will explain the issue and agree a course of action before continuing. All completed work is guaranteed in writing and documented with photographs.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Rubber Roofing
Frequently Asked Questions About Rubber Roofing
We get asked many of the same questions about EPDM rubber roofing. Here are the answers to the ones that come up most often.
How long does a rubber roof last?
A well-installed EPDM rubber roof has a proven lifespan of 40 to 50 years. Some manufacturers guarantee their membranes for 20 to 25 years, but the actual performance record extends well beyond that. By comparison, felt typically lasts 10 to 15 years before requiring replacement.
Is EPDM rubber roofing better than felt?
In nearly every measurable way, yes. EPDM is more durable, more resistant to UV degradation, more flexible in cold weather, and longer lasting. The installation process is also safer because it does not involve open flames. The upfront cost is higher, but the lifetime cost is considerably lower because you are not replacing the roof every decade.
How long does it take to fit a rubber roof?
Most domestic rubber roofing installations — garages, extensions, dormers — are completed within a single day. Larger or more complex structures may require two days. We will confirm the expected timeline during the initial survey.
Can rubber roofing be installed over an existing flat roof?
In many cases, yes. If the existing roof deck is in sound condition, the EPDM membrane can be laid directly over the old covering. However, if the deck or timber beneath is damaged, we will need to strip back and replace those elements first. We assess this during the free survey.
Do you cover areas outside Cardiff?
Yes. We are Cardiff-based but regularly carry out rubber roofing work in Newport, Swansea, Bridgend, the Vale of Glamorgan, Pontypridd, Caerphilly, Penarth, Barry and throughout South Wales. For larger projects, we are happy to travel further.
Need rubber roofing in Cardiff or anywhere across Wales?
Whether you need a new EPDM membrane on a garage, an extension re-roof, or a commercial flat roof installation, we bring the same attention to detail and use the same quality materials on every project. Call us for a free, no-obligation quote or fill in the contact form and we will be in touch promptly.
