If you need dry ridge and dry verge installation in Cardiff or anywhere across Wales, our team can help. We remove failing sand-and-cement mortar from ridge lines and gable ends and replace it with mechanically fixed dry fix systems that won’t crack, crumble, or let water in.
Traditional mortar has its limits — particularly in South Wales, where persistent rain, strong coastal winds, and regular freeze-thaw cycles put roofs under constant pressure. We have seen countless ridge tiles loosened by nothing more than a few harsh winters, and verge edges left exposed after mortar has washed out. A dry ridge or dry verge system removes that weakness entirely.
Our work covers properties of all types, from Victorian terraces in Pontypridd and Caerphilly to modern detached homes in the Vale of Glamorgan and Penarth. Whether you need a full installation on a new roof or a retrofit to replace deteriorating mortar on an older property, we carry out the work to current British Standards and leave you with a roof edge that is secure, ventilated, and built to last.
Why Upgrade from
Sand & Cement to Dry Fix?
Why Upgrade from Sand & Cement to Dry Fix?
Mortar-bedded ridges and verges were the industry standard for decades, but the limitations are well documented. The mix degrades over time. It cannot flex with the natural movement of a building. And once it starts to fail, gaps open up for water, wind, and pests to get in.
A dry ridge system uses stainless steel screws and mechanical clamps to fix each ridge tile firmly to the roof structure. Beneath the tiles, a ventilated ridge roll channels rainwater away while allowing the roof space to breathe — reducing condensation and the risk of damp in your loft.
A dry verge system works on the same principle but at the gable ends. Interlocking uPVC caps are fitted over the exposed tile edges, creating a sealed, weatherproof finish that holds fast in high winds. No repointing. No crumbling cement. No exposed gaps where birds or rodents can nest.
Since 2015, BS 5534 — the British Standard for slating and tiling — has required that all new-build roofs and re-roofing work use mechanically fixed ridges and hips. Mortar alone is no longer considered sufficient. We install every system to meet or exceed this standard, whether the property is in Cardiff, Barry, Newport, or Bridgend.
Mechanically Fixed for Long-Term Security
Stainless steel screws and clamps anchor each tile to the roof structure. No reliance on mortar that cracks under pressure.
Improved Roof Ventilation
Built-in ventilation channels reduce condensation in the roof space, helping prevent damp insulation and mould growth in the loft.
Compliant with BS 5534
All installations meet the current British Standard for slating and tiling. Required for new builds and re-roofing projects throughout England and Wales.
No More Cracked Mortar
Once fitted, there is nothing to repoint, patch, or replace. The system flexes with the natural movement of the building and holds firm year after year.
Our Dry Ridge & Dry Verge Installation Process
Every job starts with a free roof survey. We inspect the condition of your existing ridges, verges, and underlying timbers, then talk you through the options and provide a written quotation with no obligation attached. Once you go ahead, the process is straightforward. We strip the old mortar bedding carefully, clean and prepare the surface, extend battens where needed, and fit the new dry fix components — ridge roll, unions, clamps, screws, and verge caps. Most domestic installations are completed within one to two days.

Roofing & Guttering
We do not subcontract any of our dry ridge or dry verge work. The team on your property works for us directly, which means we are accountable for every stage — from the initial survey through to the final inspection. If something needs discussing mid-job, you are speaking to the person doing the work, not a go-between relaying messages.
We use tested, reputable materials and fit them according to manufacturer specifications. There is a reason we avoid the cheapest products on the market: they do not hold up to the conditions we see across Wales. We would rather install a system that performs for 20 years than one that saves a few pounds and fails within five.
All completed work is covered by a written guarantee. We document every job with photographs so you can see exactly what was done, what was replaced, and how the finished system sits. There are no hidden charges. The price we quote is the price you pay.

Our Own Team, Every Time
No subcontractors, no agency labour. The roofers fitting your dry ridge or dry verge system work for us, and they answer to us. That level of control matters when the work involves stripping old mortar from an exposed ridge line in unpredictable weather.

Materials That Withstand Welsh Conditions
We specify dry fix components from established manufacturers. Stainless steel fixings, UV-stable verge caps, and breathable ridge rolls — all chosen because they perform well in the wet, windy conditions that are typical across Cardiff, Bridgend, and the wider South Wales coast.

Documented and Transparent
We photograph every stage of the installation. If we uncover damage beneath the old mortar — rotten battens, cracked tiles, perished felt — we stop and discuss it with you before proceeding. You will know exactly what was found and what was done about it.

Areas We Cover Across Wales
We are based in Cardiff and carry out dry ridge and dry verge installations right across Wales. Our regular working area includes Cardiff, Newport, the Vale of Glamorgan, Penarth, Barry, Caerphilly, Pontypridd, Bridgend, and Swansea. We also take on work further afield where the project warrants it.
The same standards apply to every property, regardless of size or location. A terraced house in Splott receives the same quality of materials and attention as a detached farmhouse in Pembrokeshire. We turn up when we say we will, keep the site clean, and do not leave until the job is properly finished.
If you are unsure whether your property falls within our coverage area, get in touch and we will let you know.

Frequently Asked Questions
Dry Ridge & Dry Verge FAQs
If you have a question about dry ridge or dry verge systems that is not covered here, call us or send a message through the contact form and we will get back to you.
What is the difference between dry ridge and dry verge?
A dry ridge system secures the tiles along the apex of your roof using mechanical fixings rather than sand and cement. A dry verge system does the same thing at the gable ends — the sloped edges where the roof meets the side wall. Both eliminate the need for mortar, which cracks and deteriorates over time, and provide a long-lasting, maintenance-free finish.
Is dry ridge a building regulation requirement in the UK?
Yes. Under BS 5534, the British Standard for slating and tiling, all new pitched roofs and re-roofing projects must have mechanically fixed ridges and hips. Mortar on its own is no longer considered sufficient. This applies to new builds and most re-roofing work across England and Wales.
How much does dry ridge and dry verge installation cost in Cardiff?
Costs depend on the size and pitch of the roof, the system specified, and whether scaffolding is required. For a typical semi-detached property in Cardiff, dry verge installation usually falls between £750 and £1,200, with dry ridge between £400 and £700. We provide free, no-obligation surveys and written quotations so you know the cost upfront.
Can dry ridge and dry verge be fitted to an existing roof?
Yes. Dry ridge and dry verge systems can be retrofitted to most existing tiled and slated roofs. We carefully remove the old mortar, clean and prepare the area, and fit the new mechanical fixings. We assess suitability during a free roof survey and will advise if any additional work is needed beforehand.
How long does a dry ridge and dry verge installation take?
Most standard domestic installations are completed within one to two days. Larger or more complex roofs may require slightly longer. Dry fix systems can be installed in a wider range of weather conditions than traditional mortar, which means fewer delays.
What guarantee do you provide on dry ridge and dry verge work?
All dry ridge and dry verge installations carried out by Wales Roofing and Guttering come with a written guarantee. The specific terms depend on the scope of work and materials used. We confirm guarantee details in your quotation before any work begins.
Ready to replace failing mortar with a dry fix system that lasts?
Whether it is a handful of loose ridge tiles or a full dry verge installation across both gable ends, we bring the same level of care and the same quality of materials to every job. Call us for a free, no-obligation survey, or fill in the contact form and we will be in touch.
