Mortar-bedded ridges and verges were the industry standard for decades, but the limitations are well documented. The mix degrades over time. It cannot flex with the natural movement of a building. And once it starts to fail, gaps open up for water, wind, and pests to get in.
A dry ridge system uses stainless steel screws and mechanical clamps to fix each ridge tile firmly to the roof structure. Beneath the tiles, a ventilated ridge roll channels rainwater away while allowing the roof space to breathe — reducing condensation and the risk of damp in your loft.
A dry verge system works on the same principle but at the gable ends. Interlocking uPVC caps are fitted over the exposed tile edges, creating a sealed, weatherproof finish that holds fast in high winds. No repointing. No crumbling cement. No exposed gaps where birds or rodents can nest.
Since 2015, BS 5534 — the British Standard for slating and tiling — has required that all new-build roofs and re-roofing work use mechanically fixed ridges and hips.
